How do we behave during a presentation?
What is the structure/content?
System 1 thinking- intuitive system
System 2 thinking- logical system
What do I want to become better at this for?
-Find better reason to want to do something->outweighs fears
-In future life, I want to have confidence in professionally and efficiently communicating my idea within pitches
-Identify core values of purpose
Communication is through three ways:
NVB- 55%
Way we say the words- 38%
Actual words used- 7%
-Pitch, volume and speed- equally as important
Crutch words- so, ok, erm, and, etc. AVOID
-Use pauses to build a connection
-Appropriate eye contact
-Eye contact split into zones? ->even eye contact to each place
-Don't be afraid to make eye contact for longer than usual, don't glance
-Be aware of unconscious movement- leaning, scratching, 'helicopter' hands
-Hand movement- make it appropriate to what you're saying
-STRUCTURE
- Bookending-> Mentioning something at the start, and returning at the end->adds professional edge
POWER OF 3
-Intro (including book end 1) -Tell audience what content will be
-First section
-Second
-Third
-Conclusion (including bookend 2)
Content should be personal and unique
-Heart (Why, who, who else):
mission
identity
values
-Head(where, what how):
skills
behaviour
environment
LOGICAL LEVELS
1 hour practice on content, 1 hour on structure, 1 hour on presentation
WHAT I LEARNT:
I found this session extremely helpful, as I always thought I had a general understanding of presenting skills, but this showed me just how much more there is to it.
The most interesting point for me was how the words are said, and how this is often more important that the actual words said.
I can imagine this will be really useful in my future tasks, such as presenting my work in an academic and professional environment.
