BIG HEADS Kate Gibb

We had another Big Heads session, this time with Kate Gibb, an illustrator originally trained in textile design, who now specialises in silkscreen. Several of her points were extremely interesting, as her approach to getting paid work was unlike how most practitioners work, as she often creates work which she wants to, and then finds someone to purchase it.

However, on the occasions that she does create commissioned work, she said that the creative process was fairly drawn out, as she often sent many roughs to the client before they decided on a final design, which she then added colour to.

In addition, Gibb gave us several pieces of advice as illustrators just starting out, one of which was as soon as we start to feel like we know what we are doing, we should change it, which makes sure our practises stay fresh and innovative. In addition, she urged us to spend this time during our degree to really expand our skill set and not worry about getting things right all the time, and to just do it all, as often the most exciting pieces occur when things don't work out as originally planned.
