INTENT
- The brief was to create simple sketches which would be easily transferrable into illustrator documents which he could then use to illustrate his different stages of designing.
- He wanted something with a similar vibe to Adrian Johnson's work (Below) But with using tones of only one colour
PROCESS
- I roughed quite a bit before developing this set of sketches, which we then discussed, with my references to colour and how I imagined he would construct them
- He then worked on them the following day and sent me over the finished designs
- I have never really worked with anyone creatively in this way, and I wasn't really sure what to expect, but I found it actually really fun to talk with him about my ideas and sketches, before relinquishing control to him
- The outcomes were not at all as I had imagined, as if it was me drawing them on illustrator they would look very different, but I feel they really serve the purpose and I hope that Nicky was happy with what I produced for him to work with!
- I found working with tones of one colour incredibly hard, as I like to use a few select colours, but I think it taught me a lot about considering the relationship between shapes, which is something I will definitely explore more in my practise next year
WHAT NEXT
- I definitely want to collaborate with more graphic designers, as I found the process of changing between discussion and sketching, before letting someone else make the finished outcome was really enjoyable, and taught me a lot about other people's working practises
- I think I just need to ensure I am honest with people I am working with, and that they feel comfortable in telling me what they dislike, as I will not be offended, and if there are things they want changing, I will happily work on them until they are as they are right and fit the brief
- I would love to create more artwork from start to finish within a collaboration, so that I feel we are both more working practitioners
