AOI talk

NOTES:

Close ups, sketchbook pages, time lapses, etc. can be included in insta- varied and up to date

Email? Pdf of 1-3 images, no bigger than 1mb

Register for income tax within 3 months of starting

-Keep, file and organise all paperwork, receipts and accounts-> will be 4 times a year
- Can claim back tickets etc from shows, exhibitions etc.

Lend copyright- borrowing licensing
Copyright assignment means the client owns it
- Can't put it in own portfolio
-They can sell it, use it however

Clients don't need copyright, license will work just as well
Logo etc. could be assigned £35000ish
Copyright separate to original artwork

Right of paternity- identified as creator
Right of integrity- Work not subject to derogatory treatment- cropping, colour changes etc.

Use lower resolution images online to prevent copying
Mention copyright where work appears

- If going to be shared widely, maybe incorporate name?
- For any job, create a contract
-> Make job fair
-> Include cancellation fees etc.
-> Include element of roughs first to ensure you're not working for free

Need to know end user and use/size

DO NOT WORK FOR FREE

Don't offer a ball-park figure- day fees imply content made during that time is owned by the employer

Have right to clarify to establish reach of company

-Negotiation of cost and deliverables- don't have the budget? suggest lower cost products/outcomes

Advertising:
-Above the line advertising: Publicity of material appearing within paid space advertising e.g. posters in underground, digital, billboards

-Below the line advertising: Publicity material that is not paid space e.g. fliers, direct mail, clients, website

Size of circulation of magazine etc. -Find out at abc.org.uk

Buyouts- not copyright assignment- check!!->Big fee and they continue to use

Relicense is 60-70% of original fee

Client speculative/visualisation ->Internal work- not for use outside- day work
Murals- day rate


WHAT I LEARNT:

It was really interesting to explore and understand the legalities of producing and selling work to a professional level, and the complexities of copyright.

Although a lot of this isn't entirely useful for me at the moment, it's great to understand the potential pitfalls and how I can avoid them. It's also made me think about legal issues when curating others work etc.
