Study Task 2

Defining my practice is something I've been struggling with over the past year, but I'm beginning to start finding out which sectors of design I enjoy creating work for:

Publishing and Book Design
My practice is quite design based, and I really love creating work which has a function as well as being the first point of contact for the audience, as I'm really able to set the tone of the work. I also really enjoy figuring out how to communicate the core ethos of the work in a visual manner, especially alongside type.

Editorial and Reportage
Quite a few of the briefs I have been working on are editorial based, and I feel like I'm gaining confidence with creating work which effectively communicates just the right amount of information in a thought provoking manner. Although I still struggle quite a lot with thinking in this new manner, I find the challenge enjoyable, and I think that continuing to respond to content in this way will ensure my practice stays fresh and new.

Product and Packaging
This is a sector which I really love working within, as I find the whole process so enjoyable, from thinking of initial concepts to planning the construction to creating the actual 3D final outcome. I view packaging design with the same sort of intent as I do book cover design, as it encompasses a lot of different skills in order to show just enough of the content on the outside to intrigue the audience and make them want to engage. I also have a strong interest in creating products, which I would like to explore more throughout this year

Advertising and Promotion
This is a sector which I had always imagined I would work within, but I'm beginning to realise it may not be in the same way as I imagined, as through working with Anorak this year I've started to realise how much I love event management and the more practical side to the creative industries. I've done a small amount of promotion work last year, but I would like to explore the less tangible aspects of illustration in my future practice.

Character and Narrative
This is something I've been shying away from this year, as I find it such an immense challenge, but I actually do enjoy creating and developing character, so I have started to keep a private sketchbook based solely on character so that I can play and develop my character skills.
