I worked with Anorak again at The Big Malarkey as part of the Hull City of Culture 2017.
I was initially very nervous about how I was going to command the attention of 30 schoolchildren, and make this a fun learning activity However, after facing my fears with the first group, the next five only increased my confidence, and I felt more able to invite interaction and had a more natural feel to my language.
I really enjoyed working with these groups, and I would love to feed this kind of work into my future career, as I loved to see and help their creative development through craft.
My tasks were:
- To lead groups of 30 school children in two different activities (finish the story worksheets and pop up books)
- To facilitate and refine concepts for workshops
- To organise time and assistance throughout the workshops
- Set up for and tidy away each group
- To work alongside teachers to promote learning and advancement in the class
What I learnt:
- How to present and work with large groups of children
- How to assume appropriate roles when working with school groups and their teachers
- Built up a lot of confidence in teaching large groups
What next?
- Think about ways I could include more of this type of work in my career
- Work on my confidence in talking to large groups
- Keep building connections with professionals
