BIG HEADS Ed Cheverton

Key points from Ed Cheverton:

- Analogue, not digital, therefore all pieces have their perks
- Art should be a reflection of what you want to do
- Decided on work 'style' in 3rd year
- His style is nothing like him- his opportunity to play and 'let his hair down'
- Work can be anything and used for anything- it's your choice
- 'Labels' don't exist- you can be anything, you just need a love of making, you can decide what you call yourself
- Begin to become more than it contains- he worked on Jazz Dads- repetition and growth
- Strong connections with uni friends has ensured he is still in tough with other practitioners
- Slow down and stop trying to do everything, let things develop naturally
- Stories come from: Conversations; observations - come up with back story with characters and their interactions build up based on that - not very linear in idea development

What I liked the most about Cheverton's work is how playful and free it is, which really showed through in his talk, where he encouraged us to just let our practice lead us, and not try to conform to what we think illustration should be. Although his style isn't normally something I would be drawn to, I think his loose regard to shape and texture ensure that this work is fresh and playful, whilst still offering a different viewpoint on what defines illustration, and how illustrators should consider their practice.
